03 Practice

Experience

Interfaces and journeys designed around what people are actually trying to do.

Good experience design is mostly subtraction, and subtraction requires knowing what each screen is for. This practice maps the real task first, prototypes the critical paths while changes are still cheap, and tests them with the people who will use them.

Design ships as a system — components, states and rules — so the next twenty screens can be built without redesigning the first one, and it is instrumented so you can see whether it is working after launch.
